Obituary for Sophie Halayko (Ressen)

WATERVLIET - Sophie (Ressen) Halayko, 89, died Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy with her family at her side. She was born March 27th 1927 to Anna (Rushak) and Chris V. Ressen in Syracuse, NY. She attended Delaware Blodgett Vocational School graduating in 1945.
After high school, Sophie worked for New York Telephone and later Verizon Corporation. She also worked for Norton Company in Watervliet.
Sophie married John Halayko on May 20, 1950 and they resided in Watervliet NY their entire life.
Sophie was a quiet, hardworking, giving person. Everyone has a job in life, and hers was to help people with as little fanfare as possible. She was known for her volunteer work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, and the Regional Food Bank. For many years, Sophie and her dear friend Mary Caldwell, organized the pierogi sales at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet. She spent countless hours doing the most difficult jigsaw puzzles her kids brought to her from their travels.
Sophie is predeceased by her husband John, and is survived by her sons Wayne (Catherine) of Niskayuna and Jeffrey (Jessica Ritoe) of Milford Connecticut, as well as her cherished grandchildren Daniel Halayko (Claire Wilson) of Washington DC, and Elizabeth Halayko of Arlington, VA.
Friends and family are welcome to call on Wednesday, February 1st from 9:00-10:30 am at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet followed by the Parastas Service at 10:30 am. Interment will be at St Nicholas Cemetery in Maplewood.
