WATERVLIET – Robert A. Gusberti, Sr., 92, died peacefully Monday, February 6, 2017 at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany. Born in Whitehall, NY on July 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Bradway Gusberti. Mr. Gusberti was raised and educated in Watervliet and a lifelong resident.
He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 during World War II serving aboard the USS Lamson. He was wounded in combat in the Phillipines on December 7, 1944 and received the Purple Heart.
Upon returning home, he was a member of the Watervliet Fire Dept. for 3 years. He later was a draftsman for 30 years for the Benet Labs at the Watervliet Arsenal designing large artillery before retiring in 1979. He returned to school in 1977, and received an Associates Degree in Science from Hudson Valley Community College before he entered his retirement years.
Mr. Gusberti was very active in the Watervliet community. He coached his son Rob and many other Watervliet kids for the Watervliet Pop Warner and Watervliet Little League. In recent years, he could often be found at the Watervliet High School speaking to history classes about his war experience during World War II and was inducted into the Watervliet National Honor Society as a “special honoree”.
Bob was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the TGIV (Thank God Its Veterans) Breakfast Club that met every Friday at the Gateway Diner in Albany. He participated in two Capital District Patriot Flights to Washington, DC.
He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy “Babe” Kramarchyk Gusberti who died in 2014, devoted father of Shirley (Craig) Robertson of Cohoes and Robert A. Gusberti, Jr. of Woodbridge, VA; grandfather of SandilLyn Sherman (Michael) Rivet, Alexandra N. Gusberti and Robert A. Gusberti, III; great grandfather of Craig Ryan Rivet and Autumn Jubilee Rivet; brother of Joan (John) Malinowski, Ron Gusberti and the late Jean Dugan. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held Friday at 10:30 am at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. A procession will form at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet starting at 9:15 am.
