Obituary for Mary Ellen Halloran (Kelliher)

TROY – Mary Ellen (Kelliher) Halloran, daughter of the late Francis and Eleanor Kelliher, died on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes.
Born in Albany on March 2, 1940, she was educated at the “Glass School” of St. Vincent dePaul parish at Vincentian Institute. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, and did graduate work at St. Rose College.
Mary Ellen taught elementary school in Elmsford, NY, Menands, NY and Troy, NY retiring from School 2 in Troy in 2000. She was known for her creativity and dedication as a teacher, and for her personal warmth and wit. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by a brother, Frank Kelliher of Reading, MA. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Michael; sons, Steve (Amy Richards) and John (Robin Meehan); grandchildren, Aidan and Maggie Halloran; brother, John Kelliher (Christine Miles) and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
She served on the Board of the Rensselaer County Historical Society, and as a volunteer at the Society for several more years. In 2012 she was awarded the Society’s Hart-Cluett Award “for commitment to local history, historic preservation, the arts, and education.”
The family is deeply grateful to the staff members of the Eddy Village Green, especially to those in house number 4, to the Elders of house number 4 among whom Mary Ellen resided for the past six months, to her many friends at Beechwood Retirement Community, and to her high-school classmate and dear friend Owen Glenn for his support and care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Rensselaer Newman Chapel+Cultural Center, 2125 Burdett Avenue, Troy, at 6 PM on Friday, February 17, 2017. There will be no public viewing, but a reception for family and friends will be held at 7 PM, immediately following the funeral, in the lounge of the Newman Chapel + Cultural Center.
In lieu of flowers, mourners are encouraged to make a donation, in Mary Ellen’s memory, to Unity House, 504 Broadway, Troy, NY 12180; the Rensselaer County Historical Society, 57 Second Street, Troy, NY 12180; or to their own favorite charity.
