Obituary for John F. Miller

John F.  Miller
San Diego, CA - John Francis Miller was born on June 30, 1926 in Watervliet, NY and died on February 27, 2017 in San Diego, CA. He was predeceased by his wife Jean Grober Miller; parents John Miller and Elizabeth House Miller, and siblings, William Miller and Sally Miller Davin. He is survived by his daughter Eva Miller and several nieces and nephews. John grew up in Watervliet where he attended the former St. Patrick’s Church. He was a member of the Class of 1944 of Catholic Central High School in Troy. Following high school, John enlisted in the Army Air Corps, near the end of World War II, and was trained as a radio operator using the Morse Code. In 1947 he was married to Jean Mary Grober, and together they enjoyed 63 years of wedded life until Jean’s death in 2010. Following his military service, John attended Syracuse University on the GI Bill, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry Science. He later earned a Master of Science Degree in Forestry Science from Yale University where he was graduated with honors. His career in Forestry took John and his wife to many places including Jacksonville, FL and Alberta, Canada. In 1960, he achieved a high score on an aptitude test in the New York Times which led to training and a career as one of the first computer programmers for IBM. He and his family moved to Vermont in 1970 and they resided there until 2007, when they moved to San Diego. While in San Diego John volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP) of the San Diego Police and he served as an usher at St Patrick's Catholic Church in San Diego.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 10 AM in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church, 7th Avenue at 25th Street in Watervliet. The Rite of Committal and interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with John’s family on Tuesday from 4 until 7PM at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway in Watervliet.
