Obituary for Mary Erin Hayes (McGullion)

WATERVLIET – Mary Erin Hayes, 92, died Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Albany County Nursing Home. Born in Cohoes on February 2, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Dennis J. and Madeleine Evensen McGullion. Mary was raised in Watervliet and was a graduate of St. Patrick’s School and Catholic Central High School in Troy.
Mary was employed by the former Hoffman’s Restaurant in Latham as a waitress, NY Telephone Co. and by the NYS Education Dept. as a clerk in the library department for 20 years before retiring in 1990. She was also a homemaker. She wintered in Tallahassee, FL with her daughters.
She was a member of the Watervliet VFW Post #729 Ladies Auxiliary and was a communicant of the former St. Patrick’s Church in Watervliet. She said her Rosary every day and was a member of the American Life League supporting Pro Life.
She was the beloved mother of James F. (Sandra) Hayes of Melrose, Maryann (Robert) Kessling of Tallahassee, FL, Ellen Allen (Tom Murphy) of Watervliet and Thomas P. (Mary) Hayes of Latham; adored grandmother of Joey, Paul and Robert Kessling, Erin Bessette, Steven Wilson, Susan and John Allen, Tara Hayes Martin and Tom Hayes and the late James F. Hayes, V and several great grandchildren; sister of the late Margaret “Peg” Kelly and Albert “Bud” McGullion. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses, aides and staff at Albany Co. Nursing Home for their dedication to mom’s care.
The funeral will be Friday at 9:15 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10 am at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Watervliet. Interment St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Watervliet Civic Center, PO Box 164, Watervliet, NY 12189.
