Obituary for Edward Gerard Rhatigan

ALBANY – Edward Gerard Rhatigan, 81, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Home in Delmar. Born in Brooklyn, NY on March 3, 1936, he was the oldest son of the late Gerard and Helen Ryan Rhatigan. At the age of 7, Ed moved with his family to Albany and attended St. Joseph’s Academy.
Ed served with the US Marine Corps during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. While in the Marine Corps, Ed was a lightweight boxing champion.
Upon returning home, Ed was employed by Tobin Packing Co., Schaefer Brewery and was a carpet layer/salesman for Abbey Rug. In 1975, he returned to school to further his education at Albany Business College and later at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in accounting.
Along with his late beloved wife Maureen, Ed moved downstate and lived in Port Chester, NY for many years where he was employed as an accountant by ITT Selectro, a manufacturing company based in Bristol, CT. Following their retirement, they moved back to Albany to be closer to their families.
Ed was a member of the Albany Lodge of Elks, Albany Ancient Order of Hibernians, Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion Post and was a communicant of the Parish of Mater Christi. Ed enjoyed life and loved to golf, fish, swim and was a great story teller.
He was the husband of the late Maureen Groark Rhatigan who died May 17, 2015; brother of Elaine (late John) Fahey, Katherine (late Robert) Waugh, Laetitia Rhatigan, Melanie Martin, Geraldine Rhatigan, Michael (Joyce) Rhatigan, Mary Rhatigan, Dolores (James) Conroy and the late Mary Jo Rhatigan, Elizabeth (late Arnold) Bell, Joseph Garrett (Lynn) Rhatigan and George (Susan) Rhatigan; brother in law of MaryAnn (Donald) Frering, Marjory Groark and Gail (Brian) McCabe. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral mass on Monday at 11:00 am at the Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell Street, Albany with Rev. John F. Tallman officiating. Interment will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. There are no public calling hours.
