Obituary for Elizabeth G. "Betty" McVeigh (Spain)

SYCAWAY – Elizabeth “Betty” G. Spain McVeigh, 90, died peacefully Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy with her family at her side. Born in Troy on September 9, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Clarence A. and Mary Sheeran Spain.
Betty attended St. Augustine’s School, School 18 and was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School. A lifelong resident of Sycaway, she was employed by Montgomery Ward & Co., NYS Motor Vehicles and Parkins Market on Hoosick Street in Troy. She later ran a day care from her home and “helped raise most of the kids in Sycaway”.
She was a devout communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church where she served on the Bereavement Committee, past member of the Pastoral Council, Eucharistic Minister and helped organize the first bazaar.
She volunteered at Samaritan Hospital at the gift shop, front desk and as a Eucharistic Minister. She also took the dog census for the Town of Brunswick.
She was the wife of the late John J. McVeigh who died in 1989; devoted mother of Gerard “Jerry” (Deborah) McVeigh of Beltsville, MD and Mary Alice McVeigh (Lester Denison) of Sycaway; adored grandmother of Patrick McVeigh (Taylor Rahn) and Shannon McVeigh; sister of the late C. John (late Dorothy) Spain, Alson (late Harriet) Spain, Perry (late Patricia) Spain and Francis Spain. She was predeceased by her nephews, Perry Spain, Jr. and James Spain. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Her funeral mass will be Saturday at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy. Interment will follow in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Our Lady of Victory Church on Friday from 4-7 pm.
