Obituary for Chester P. "Chet" Gongoleski

Watervliet – Chester P. “Chet” Gongoleski, 92, of Watervliet, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, June 9, 2017. Born in Watervliet on May 21,1925, he was the son of the late Paul and Felicia Gongoleski.

Chet was raised in Watervliet and started work young to help support his family. As soon as he was able, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served honorably during World War II on tours that brought him to England, France, and the front lines of Germany, among many other places. While in Germany he met the love of his life, his wife and best friend, Emily Krzywonos. Upon returning home from war, he worked as a Machine Operator at the Ford Motor Company until it closed in 1990.

Chet was two-time commander of Watervliet VFW Post 729, with which he was always involved in the local community. For many years, he helped organize the annual Memorial Day parade and took an active part in marching in parades honoring veterans. He held the position of VFW Albany County Commander and various chairs State-wide in the Military Order of the Cooties PUP Tent 6.

When not at work, Chet dedicated his life to the lives of other veterans. He served countless hours volunteering at the VA hospital and received many awards and medals honoring his selfless nature. He served as an usher at the former Immaculate Conception church and was a member of the Pulaski Cub.

His charm and wit brought smiles to the many faces that needed it most. Even when faced with severe health issues he never complained and managed to make others laugh. He kept a song on his lips and in his heart right till the end.

Chet is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Emily, together with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. He was the best Dad to their four children; Mary Jean (Bernard) Shaw, Patricia A. Finn Sears, Chester R. Gongoleski, and Debora M. Larson, a wonderful grandfather to Sara (Christopher) Suarez, Paul (Abigail) Shaw, Kristina (John) Byrnes, Gregory Shaw, Emily Finn, Nicole Finn, and Christopher Gongoleski, and a proud great grandfather to Seth Suarez, Jacob Suarez, Liam Shaw, Emilio Perez, and Camille Shaw. He was preceded in death by his daughter Elizabeth and siblings; Louise Patrizio, Victor, Raymond, Anthony, and Phillip Gongoleski.

Chet’s family would like to thank the staff at Rosewood Rehab and Nursing Center for the impeccable and loving care they have given to their beloved Chester.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 14 at 11:00 AM at the Parker Bros. Memorial Funeral Home, Watervliet. Interment will follow in Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, June 13, from 5 until 8 PM.
