Obituary for Vera Szabiet (Karpek)

Bryn Mawr, PA - Vera Karpek Szabiet, 87, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2017 in Bryn Mawr, PA. The daughter of Ignaty and Anastasia Harris Karpek, Vera was born in Watervliet, NY on November 13, 1929. Vera graduated with the Class of 1947 from Mount Pleasant High School in Schenectady, NY.

Drawing on her gifts of organization and attention to detail, Vera worked as an administrative assistant for a number of years at an insurance agency in Schenectady. She met and married her devoted and beloved husband, Adam J. Szabiet, and they built their lives together over the next 37 years, until his death in 1999. Family and friends were central in her life, and Vera was always most proud of her cherished life roles of wife, mother, and, eventually, grandmother. Vera was also very creative and artistic as she loved to sing, play the piano, paint, and crochet, and she shared her love of music and art with her family.

A long-time resident of Troy, NY, Vera was active in the PTA and other community organizations, as well as being a lifelong communicant of St. Basil's Orthodox Church in Watervliet, NY. She was a member of the "R" Club and the Sisterhood of St. Basil's Orthodox Church. Eventually, she relocated to Pennsylvania to live closer to family after her husband Adam passed away.

She is survived by her three loving daughters and their husbands: Susan (and William) Ringle of Wallingford, PA, Lisa (and Peter) Spooner of Hollis, NH, and Linda (and Darrell) Stam of Hollis, NH; as well as her five cherished grandchildren: Nicholas Ringle, Matthew and Emily Spooner, and Andrew and Julia Stam.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Parker Brothers Memorial Funeral Home, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet, NY on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 4-7pm with a Panikhida service at 6:30pm. Funeral services are planned at St. Basil's Orthodox Church, 6 Lansing Avenue, Watervliet, NY for Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 9:30am where the Archpriest Peter Olsen will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Basil's Cemetery, Elm Street, Maplewood.
