NIAGARA FALLS – Olga Waganka, 92, formerly of North Greenbush, died peacefully Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Elderwood at Wheatfield. Born and raised in Nanticoke, PA, she was the daughter of the late Wasyl and Mary Meko Bluey.
At the age of 18, she moved to Washington, DC and worked as a secretary for the federal government for three years. She met her late husband Walter at a Ukrainian dance and following their marriage moved to South Troy. In 1949 they built a home and moved to North Greenbush.
Olga was a homemaker and was employed as an executive secretary for the plant comptroller at GAF in Rensselaer for 19 years before retiring in 1978.
She was a communicant of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet. She was a member of the Wynantskill Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing pinochle, bingo and Skip-Bo. She has resided in Niagara Falls since 2016.
She was the wife of the late Wladymir “Walter” Waganka who died in 2011; mother of the late Jean Laemlein and mother in law of Robert Laemlein of Webster, NY and the late Raymond M. Waganka formerly of New Baltimore; adored grandmother of Jessica L. (Timothy) Bakula of North Tonawanda, NY; proud great-grandmother of Landon James Bakula; sister of the late Michael Bleuy, Anna Bukoski, Mary Matson, Ted Bluey, Helen Krzyznieski, Millie Orlando and Raymond Bluey. Olga is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday, August 11th at 9:00 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 9:30 am at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Watervliet with Rev. Michael Myschuk officiating. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Maplewood. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday, August 10th from 4-6 pm with the Parastas service at 5:30 pm.
