Obituary for Dorothy D. Phelps (Davis)

Loudonville – Dorothy Lorinda Davis Phelps, 89, of Loudonville, died Thursday morning, August 3, 2017 at the Loudonville Adult Home. She was the wife of the late William E. Phelps, Sr.

Mrs. Phelps was born in Menands to the late Joseph and Isabella Davis. She received her education in the Menands and Troy school systems, graduating from Troy High in 1945. She moved to Watervliet in 1941 and later to Menands in 1985. In 2010 she moved into Coburn Village in Rexford where she resided until moving to Loudonville Assisted Living in 2013.

Mrs. Phelps retired from Hudson Valley Farm Credit where she held a variety of positions over a period of 40 years. She was treasurer at the time of her retirement. She was a lifelong member of the former Jermain Memorial Presbyterian Church in Watervliet. She served as a trustee and elder of the church, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and was President of the United Presbyterian Women.

Survivors include her step-children, Virginia (Edward) Willey of Menands; Carl (Carol) Phelps of Rotterdam; Judith Phelps Murdie of Queensbury; and William Phelps of Wilson, WY. She is also survived by 7 step-grandchildren, 11 Step-greatgrandchildren, 1 step-great great grandson, and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Evelyn Franklin, Margaret VanLeuven, Elizabeth Ballantyne, and Edward Davis.

Mrs. Phelps’ family is grateful for the kindness and loving care by the staff at Loudonville Adult Home during her time there. She was always happy when Penny, the resident therapy dog, would visit and enjoyed giving her dog treats.

A memorial service to honor Mrs. Phelps’ life will be held at a later date. Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204.
