Obituary for Michael J. Handerhan

STILLWATER – Michael J. Handerhan, 52, died peacefully early Tuesday morning, November 21, 2017 at St. Peter’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Albany on July 29, 1965, he was the son of the late Donald A. and Beverly A. Kayser Handerhan, Sr.

Mike was raised in Menands and was a graduate of Menands School and Columbia High School, class of 1983. He later graduated from SUNY Cobleskill with an Associate’s degree in Agricultural Science.

Mike was employed by Chemlawn for 5 years before becoming the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds for the Town of Clifton Park for the past 25 years. He also was employed by the Maine Street Grill in Jonesville.

He was a member of the Round Lake Hose Company before joining the Arvin Hart Fire Company in Stillwater where he has been a member for over 20 years. He has been a Fire Commissioner on the apparatus committee for 15 years and also served as a safety officer.

Mike enjoyed camping, drumming, family trips to Disney World, vacationing in Rehoboth Beach, DE and Ocean City, MD and was an avid fan of the Oakland Raiders and the band, Rush.

He is the beloved husband of 30 years of Lori A. Wickes Handerhan; best dad of Kara A. Handerhan (Carl DiVeglia, III) of Colonie and Shawn M. Handerhan of Tampa, FL; dear brother of Donald A. (Amy) Handerhan, Jr., Colleen A. (Mark) Carnegie and Susan E. Handerhan all of Menands; son in law of Ann Wickes of Mechanicville and the late Robert Wickes; brother in law of Chris (Edie) Wickes of Mechanicville, Susan (Sally Gangell) Wickes of Saratoga Springs and Michelle (Robert) Silverberg of Smithtown, Long Island. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Santoro, Dr. Mane, Dr. Ammannagari and the nurses and staff on 5 McAuley at St. Peter’s Hospital for the wonderful care given to Mike.

His funeral mass will be Saturday at 9 am at St. Joan of Arc Church, 76 Menand Road, Menands. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens, Colonie. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Friday from 4-7 pm.
