Obituary for Jean M. Vanderzee (Bell)

Saratoga Springs – Jean M. Vanderzee, 87, passed away peacefully at the Gateway House of Peace on Saturday, January 6, 2018. Born in Albany on September 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late William and Anne Bell.
Jean was a 1947 graduate of Greenwich Central School. Following graduation she went on to further her education, receiving her Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland in 1951 and later, her Master’s degree from SUNY Albany in 1969.
Jean was a founding member and the original owner of Willard Mountain Ski Area in Greenwich. Her love of skiing played a major role in her life, as she ran disabled ski programs at both Windham Mountain and Gore Mountain. She also spent much of her time volunteering at Double H Hole in the Woods. This kind, compassionate nature helped lead her in a fulfilling career as a physical education teacher at Salem High School and Hoosic Valley Central Schools.
When not volunteering or working, Jean could often be found traveling the world. Her extensive travels brought her all over Europe, Asia, South America, and North America. She spent her last 25 years on the east shore of Schroon Lake hiking with the “Crooked Canes Club”, skiing Gore Mountain with the “70-plus Ski Club”, and enjoying the summers on the lake with her beloved grandchildren.
Jean is survived by her children; David (Sally) Vanderzee of Clifton Park, Anne (Fred) Myott of Stillwater, and Kris (Tracy) Vanderzee of Queensbury, and her grandchildren; David Vanderzee, Candice Vanderzee, Adam Myott, Amanda Vanderzee, and Zachary Vanderzee. She was preceded in death by her former husband and friend, David J. Vanderzee, who passed away in 1991.
A memorial celebration of life to honor Jean’s memory will be held this summer in Schroon Lake. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Jean in a special way may consider a donation to Double H Hole in the Woods, 97 Hidden Valley Rd, Lake Luzerne, NY 12846.
