Obituary for Joseph F. Oathout

Joseph F.  Oathout
BOYNTON BEACH, FL - Joseph F. Oathout, 92, formerly of Guilderland, died at home on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 after a long illness. Born in Troy, NY, Joseph was the oldest child of Thomas and Catherine Jojo Oathout.

After St. Joseph's Grade School, he attended Catholic Central High School. He graduated from St. Thomas Junior Seminary in Bloomfield, CT and then from St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, NY.

As a priest of the Albany Diocese, Joseph was assistant pastor at several Capital District parishes while teaching at Catholic Central High School where he eventually became Vice-Principal. Later he was Guidance Counselor at Bishop Burke High School in Gloversville and then the first Principal at Bishop Scully High School in Amsterdam. For several years he was also Director of Marion Lodge girl’s camp. After his school career, Joseph worked for the NYS Dept. of Social Services in Medicaid administration retiring in 1989.

Before moving to Florida in 1999, Joseph was active at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception singing in the choir; assisting with faith formation; and serving on the parish council. For several years he was a member of the Albany Diocesan School Board. Joseph was also a volunteer at Samaritan and St. Peter's Hospitals. He was a founding member of the Guilderland Community Theater and enjoyed singing with the Masterworks Chorus at The College of Saint Rose joining the latter on its 1996 tour in Ireland.

Joseph continued to be active in his Florida retirement community. He worked for the Citizen's Observation Patrol and served on the Homeowners Board of Directors. Having an excellent voice for both speaking and singing, he was frequently found on stage in variety shows and musical productions. As a Florida Notary Public, he officiated at weddings and provided service to his neighbors and his community's Co-op Board. He also volunteered for the Komen South Florida Race for the Cure.

Joseph enjoyed traveling with his wife to many interesting places worldwide, but what he loved most was going each summer to their cabin in the woods in Edinburg,NY.

He is survived by his wife Margaret J. (Ahearn) Oathout; siblings Thomas (Ann) Oathout of Speigletown, Rosemary Oathout and Kathleen Valenti both of Troy and Pauline (Pallozzi) of Cohoes as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a long time friend of Bill Wilson.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 9 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10 am at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-7 pm.
