Obituary for Mary F. Hall Ashe (Mahoney)

GUILDERLAND – Mary F. Mahoney Hall Ashe, 97, wife of the late Joseph A. Hall and Eugene A. Ashe, died peacefully Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in Schenectady.
Mary was born in Schenectady, the daughter of the late Thomas J. Mahoney, Sr. and Bridget Callahan Mahoney. Mary graduated in 1939 from Vincentian Institute in Albany, 1942 from St. Peter’s Hospital Nursing School, in 1949 from Catholic University with a BS in Public Health Nursing and in 1971 from Boston University with a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Nursing.
Mary served during World War II in the US Army Nurse Corps as a First Lieutenant entering service on May 20, 1943 and honorably discharged March 17, 1946, having served in the European Theatre of Operations.
She was employed for the Veterans Administration Hospital from 1952-1980 as a Registered Nurse and supervisor in administration in Albany, NY and West Roxbury, MA. Mary had said the reason she went to work for the VA after WW II was so she could continue to treat the boys she treated on the battlefields of Europe. She was affectionately referred to as “Ma Honey”.
Mary was also a lead member of the nursing rehabilitation team assigned to the VA that treated Governor and presidential candidate George Wallace following an assassination attempt in 1972 that left him paralyzed.
She was a member of the Catholic Nurses Association, St. Peter’s Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, the VA Retirees Group, National Association of Federal Employees, St. Peter’s Hospital Auxiliary and Volunteers and a communicant of Christ the King Church and member of their Senior Citizens Group.
Mary was an inspiration to family and friends, from a young age she took on the responsibilities of caring for family members who were sick or in need. Mary could make the tough decisions when necessary, but she also had a vulnerable side. She never shirked her duty often walking to work in the deep snow on a chilly Christmas Day when the roads hadn’t been plowed. She also loved to entertain, inviting family and friends to her house to celebrate life with a home cooked meal, and a glass of wine or other spirits. She even taught some of us to tie our shoes and to be gracious. Put simply, the people who met Mary were the better for it and she enjoyed being a part of their lives.
Mary lived on Hillcrest Avenue in Albany, Maynes Avenue and Mallard’s Pond both in Guilderland, Naples, FL, Avila, Kingsway Apts in Schenectady, Atria Shaker & Crossgates and last at Kingsway Arms.
The family would like to give special thanks to all the staff and fellow health care professionals at Kingsway Arms for the wonderful care given to Mary.
Mary is the beloved aunt of Veronica (William) Barnhart of Carlsbad, NM, Linda (late David) Ryan of Halfmoon, Mary Ann (William) Parillo of Schuylerville, James K. Hall of Albany, Martin (Bonnie) Goggin of Rotterdam, Maureen Hall (M. Brian) Fennerty of Portland, OR, Michael J. (Anne Sager) Hall of Albany, Kenneth Bulson of Kansas, Jerry (Joe) Teresi of Bethlehem and the late Robert Venn, Eleanor Bulson, Eileen Bulson and Judy Jensen. Mary was predeceased by her brother and several sisters and her brother in law, Robert (Betty) Hall. She is also survived by several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass on Tuesday, July 17th at 11:00 am at Christ the King Church in Guilderland and may visit with the family prior to the mass from 10-11 am at the church. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ the King Church, 20 Sumter Avenue, Albany, NY 12203.
