Menands – John F. “Jack” Harbour, Sr., 90, entered into eternal life, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

Born in Greenwich, CT, he was the son of Harry A. and Mary Margaret (Jenkins) Harbour.

Jack had been a resident of Menands since 1935 and was a graduate of Menands Elementary School and Vincentian Institute in Albany. Jack honorably served his country in the United States Navy and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal for his service. Following his military service, he returned home and soon after, married his wife, Ruth E. (Smith) Harbour. Together they enjoyed 64 years of marriage before her passing on November 25, 2014.

Jack was a sheet metal worker and had worked out of Sheet Metal Local #83 in Albany. He retired in 1989 after more than 35 years of service.

Jack enjoyed woodworking, NASCAR, family fishing trips, camping at Harris Lake, hunting and, most of all, telling his favorite stories over and over. In earlier days, he played softball and bowled at Thorne’s Lanes.

He was past chief and a life-member of the Menands Fire Company #1 where he served for over 59 years and was past commander of the Menands American Legion Post 1825.

The Harbour family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the ICU of Albany Memorial Hospital and the Critical Care Unit of St. Peter’s Hospital for the wonderful care given to Jack.

Jack was father of Paul (Beth) Harbour, John (Julie) Harbour and Nora Harbour and her sons David and Alex; brother of Harry (Flo) Harbour, Nancy Casey, Margaret Harbour-Holland and the late Patricia Gentner, William and Robert Harbour. Jack was proud of his 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 am in the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway in Watervliet. Interment will follow in the Albany Rural Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Jack’s family on Friday from 4 until 7 PM at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to a favorite charity of one’s choice in memory of John F. “Jack” Harbour.
