Obituary for Robert P. "Bob" Christie

TROY – Robert “Bob” Christie, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 15, 2018 at the Van Rensselaer Manor, the day he would have celebrated his 63rd Wedding Anniversary.
Mr. Christie was born and raised in Watervliet and was just shy of his 94th birthday, being born in 1924. Bob and his brothers ran Christie’s Meat & Grocery in Port Schuyler in Watervliet for over 40 years. He was also co-owner of Christie’s Snack Bar in the Village of Lake George. He then embarked in a career with IDS/American Express as a financial planner.
He won many sales awards in his time at American Express. He won trips and traveled with his wife Janet to Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, Bahamas and one of his favorite trips to the Greenbriar Golf Resort. He loved the game of golf and enjoyed many years at the Country Club of Troy. He loved his poker games at the Club and his many golf trips with his buddies to the resorts in the Carolinas.
Bob also loved Florida. He and his wife spent many winters at their condo in Jupiter, FL. It was there at the Golf Club of Jupiter that Bob played his best score at 75 years old. That score was an impressive 71. He lost his vision to macular degeneration in his early 80’s and joined a “blind” golf league for a few years.
He loved going out for a nice dinner which always included his Beefeaters & Schweppes Tonic.
Mr. Christie was a proud US Navy veteran of World War II and his name appears in the Veteran Memorial Park in Watervliet.
He is predeceased by his wife Janet and his brothers, William and Lloyd. He is survived by his children, Paul (Eleanor) Christie, Susan (Tim) Kirsch and Norman (Wei Chi) Christie; loving grandchildren, Andrew, Maura and Kent Christie; his special niece, Leslie Christie Farrell and his brother in law, Don Weingartner.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and aides at Van Rensselaer Manor on 3B who treated him with dignity and care in his final months. Special thanks to Chrissy Bielawa who took great care of him at home and his neighbor Mike Servo who often shared a story and a drink on the back deck.
Relatives and friends may call at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Thursday from 4:00-6:30 pm followed by the funeral service at 6:30 pm. The family will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 10:30 am to process to the Saratoga National Cemetery for a 12 noon graveside service.
