Obituary for Ida Elizabeth Hawkins (Maycock)

Menands, NY – Ida Elizabeth Hawkins, was born on April 28, 1915 in Cohoes, NY to William Maycock and Jane (Mincher) Maycock. She died on December 22, 2014 while in Florida.

In 1934, at the age of 19, Ida married Irving E. Hawkins of Cohoes. His career as a mechanical engineer began in Watervliet and Schenectady. After he joined Republic Steel in Cleveland, Ohio, assignments took the family to cities in northern Ohio and finally to Gadsden. Alabama where the couple retired and then returned to the Albany area. Irving passed away in 1979.

Throughout her life, Ida was active in church and volunteer work, including Red Cross, Salvation Army, Head Start and Girl Scouts. She served as PTA president, fed the troops and led scrap drives during World War II, and was a life member of the order of the Eastern Star. She was active in community groups where she gave lectures on bird identification, performed public and private organ programs, and taught piano and organ to generations of music students.

Ida is survived by a son, Robert I. Hawkins of New York City and a daughter, Janet Groene (Gordon), of Live Oak, Florida. Other survivors include nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at the Bowen & Parker Brothers Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham, NY on Saturday, May 16, 2015. Visiting will be held from 11 AM until 1:30 PM, followed at 1:30 PM by services and procession to Crescent Union Cemetery in Saratoga County.
