Obituary for Victoria M. "Vicki" Dewine (Crispo)

WATERVLIET - Victoria M. Crispo Dewine died peacefully on Wednesday evening, January 3, 2018 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany following a long illness.

Vicki, known to her family as V, was born with her twin brother Reverend Roderick A. Crispo, OFM on May 30, 1928. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Nistico Crispo and the widow of Lawrence R. Dewine, Sr. who died on December 29, 1996. Her son, John P. Dewine, died on January 18, 2017.
V was a life-long resident of Watervliet. Her life and, later, her memories centered on the neighborhood she grew up in. She enjoyed recalling what life was like in those days on Fourth Avenue and emphasizing the important role her family and friends played in her life.

Vicki attended Watervliet City Schools and, with her husband, was a member of Watervliet High School’s graduating class of 1946. She continued her education at the Charm Beauty School and was a hairdresser for many years.

Vicki was married to her husband, Larry (The ‘Chief’ and former NYS Fire Official) on September 9, 1950 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Watervliet.

Throughout her life Vicki was active in the church and Our Ladies Guild. She enjoyed volunteering at both Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Patrick’s Schools and at the annual church bazaars and class trips. When her children had completed their grammar school education, Vicki took employment with the Watervliet City School District and worked in food service until her retirement.

A woman of faith, Vicki was a devout Catholic who attended Mass and said her rosary daily. She served as president, for over 30 years, of the Woman’s Bocce League at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and enjoyed playing Bocce every Thursday night with “the girls”.

Vicki had a love for life; an easy going demeanor and received the most pleasure from spending time with her family and friends. She took great pride in being a twin with Fr Rod; treasured her daily visits with her sisters; the trips to visit her children and taking cinnamon bread to her grandchildren. V loved her annual getaways and visits to amusement parks with her grandchildren. Cherished the times spent with her great-grandchildren and all of her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed being in the kitchen and preparing for family dinners. V was always happy baking chocolate cream and lemon pies, genets and breads for bake sales and making eggplant parmigiana, chicken parmigiana and other Italian dishes as well as her famous ‘puffs’.

To say Vicki loved her time in the sun would be an understatement. She enjoyed family trips to Hampton Beach, NH, Washington DC, Maine and especially winters in Bradenton, Florida. She looked forward to her daily crossword puzzles, playing cards, and trips to the beach followed by grouper sandwiches and shopping at Bealls and Publix.

Vicki resided on Third Avenue in Watervliet for much of her life and in more recent years had resided at the Cornerstone Apartments in Green Island and in Bradenton, Florida. Since August of 2015 she had been in residence at the Daughters of Sarah.

V will lovingly be remembered for her dedication and devotion to her family and her friendship to all. Her children and siblings gratefully acknowledge all of the dedicated health care professionals, staff and residents who cared for our mom and sister and helped to make her stay enjoyable while residing in the Green Unit at the Daughters of Sarah.

V was the loving mother of MaryEllen (John) Kane of Colonie, NY and Bradenton FL; Larry (Katie) Dewine of Fairport, NY and Rick Dewine of Bradenton, FL; the devoted sister of Reverend Roderick A Crispo, OFM of Boston, MA, Betty Crispo and Carm Crispo, both of Green Island, NY and Mary Grace (late William) Warren of Latham, NY; the cherished grandmother of Brentt Hardy (Tanya), Jennifer DeSain (Jay), Jeffrey Dewine (Jillian), John Dewine, II and Maggie Dewine (Justin); the proud great-grandmother of Vincent, Giulietta and Lucy; the dear aunt of Pamela Warren, Rod Crispo, Greg, Siena and Mary Crispo, Dan and Kathy Dewine, Maureen, Allison and their families; along with many special Crispo cousins.
In addition to her husband, Larry; son, John and parents, John and Mary Crispo, Vicki was also preceded in death by her brothers, Joey and Ben Crispo; in-laws, Paul and Flo Dewine, Theresa, Jack and Paul Dewine; Bill Warren and Joan Osborne Dewine.

The funeral for Vicki will be held from Parker Bros Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Wednesday at 9:15 am and will then proceed to the Shrine Church of St Anthony of Padua in Troy where the funeral Mass mass will be con-celebrated at 10 am. The principal celebrants for the Mass will be Father Richard Donovan, OFM, Vicki’s twin brother, Father Rod Crispo, OFM and Father John Tallman assisted by the Franciscan Friars.
The Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St Mary’s Cemetery, Troy.
Friends are invited and may also visit with Vicki’s family, at the funeral home, on Tuesday from 4 until 8 pm.

Those wishing to remember Vicki in a special way may make a donation to a favorite charity of their choice in memory of Victoria M Dewine.
