Obituary for Harlan Edwin Lape

NORTH GREENBUSH - Harlan Edwin Lape, son of Christopher and Mabel Lape of Watervliet, NY, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2018, just short of his 90th birthday. He was always surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his brother Donald, a casualty of the Battle of the Bulge during WWII.

Harlan attended Watervliet High School, Siena College, and BU Medical School of Pharmacology. Upon graduation, he joined Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in the cardio vascular section. Over the next 33 years, he was published in several scientific journals and retired in 1985 as Group Leader and Lead Surgeon in the Hypertension Unit.

In 1952, he married Ellen Frances McGhie who became his life-long love, wife, partner, and soul mate of 66 years.

In earlier days, he enjoyed Saturday morning horseback rides with his girls, cycling with Ellen, and began his many years of dedicated daily running. Harlan was an active member and clerk of session in former Woodside Presbyterian Church. He also began following and investing in the stock market.

Over the years, Harlan and Ellen traveled extensively and especially enjoyed winters at their home on Daytona Beach, FL for 21 seasons.

Harlan is survived by his girls: wife Ellen, daughters Carolyn and Marcia and other family members including sister in-law Ann Pieper (Vince), brother in-law William McGhie (Joanne), son in-law Todd Hensel, Roy Sapone, Bob Cohen, grandchildren: Bryan, Sandra, Jason, Eric, and great grandchildren: Brandon, Tyler, Alexis, Maxwell, Ian, Jack, Isla, and Ava.

Our family is grateful for the dedicated and compassionate care given Harlan by the staff of the A1 Unit at Van Rensselaer Manor.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Thursday from 10:00-11:30 am. Interment will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy.
