Obituary for William J. McQuade

William J.  McQuade
WATERVLIET – William (Bill) J. McQuade—World War II veteran, beloved husband and father, and dessert enthusiast—passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 1 at the age of 94. He was born on May 27, 1924, the son of Julius and Helen DeLorne McQuade.As a teenager, Bill left Watervliet High School in 1942 to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he joined the 101 st Airborne, serving in the 501 st Regiment, “C” Company as a paratrooper. He was wounded three times during World War II, receiving three Purple Hearts, including for injuries sustained during the Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Upon returning home, Bill swept Catherine Lynch McQuade off of her feet, and they enjoyed 65 years of marriage together until her passing in 2011. He was the devoted father to Diane M. Burns of Latham and Paul W. (Virginia) McQuade of Waterford.
He worked at the John A. Manning Paper Co. in Green Island for more than 30 years. He served as a communicant of the former Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Watervliet and member of the Watervliet Elks Lodge #1500. For the past eight years, Bill resided at MillView Assisted Living where his mischievous smile kept everyone on their toes.
He was fondly known as Papa by John (Lynn) Burns of Loudonville, Shawn (Brian) Durant of Auburn, NY, Melissa (Greg) Valenzuela of Latham, and the late Carole Ann Below. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and four great- great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours at the Parker Bros. Memorial Funeral Home, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Thursday, September 6, from 9-10 am. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Latham. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Cohoes. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 or dav.org.
