Obituary for Thomas J. Shufelt, Sr.

Watervliet – Thomas J. Shufelt, Sr., 75, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn, Albany with his family by his side.

Born in Troy, Thomas was the son of the late Clayton W. and Elizabeth (Wickware) Shufelt, Sr. He was raised in the family home at 657 Broadway and was a graduate of Watervliet High School. Thomas served his country for two years in the U.S. Army and upon his return in 1963, took employment with the Tilley Ladder Company in Watervliet. He later worked as a steamfitter for the General Electric Company in Schenectady from where he retired following a career of 31 years. Tom also dedicated much of his time to caring for his grandchildren, Zack, Jessica and Kayla. He was also part owner of Subway in Latham since 2003.

Tom enjoyed league bowling, playing cards and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Red Skins. He was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Watervliet.

With his passing, Tom now rejoins his wife, Margaret Ann (Gensicki) Shufelt, who was formerly of Alden Street in Maplewood and to whom he was married in 1965 and had enjoyed 43 years of marriage with before her passing in 2008.

A heartfelt thank you is offered to the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Peter’s Hospice Inn and Albany Medical Center for the care and support they offered to Tom and his family.

He was the much loved father of Michelle M. Dragon (Scott) and Thomas J. Shufelt, Jr. (Wendy) all of Maplewood; grandfather of Zachary T. Dragon, Jessica A. Shufelt, Kayla M. Dragon and the late Amanda J. Shufelt; brother of Margaret Gras of Richmondville, NY and twin brother of Clayton W. Shufelt, Jr. of Watervliet; brother-in-law of Carol Gensicki (late John); dear friend of Peggy Germano (late Joseph). Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Saturday at 8:15 am and at 9 am in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 25th Street and 7th Avenue, Watervliet where the funeral Mass will be celebrated by Reverend Donald Rutherford. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Tom’s family on Friday from 4 until 7 pm.
