Obituary for Walter S. Muir

Watervliet - It is with broken hearts that the family of Walter S. Muir, 91, announce his peaceful passing on Friday, April 5, 2019 with his favorite music playing in the comfort of his home.

Walter was born in Lansingburgh, NY on June 9, 1927 to Walter and Bertha Van Vranken Muir. His beloved wife of 61 years, Mary (Mae) Brennan Muir died in 2010. Walt is survived by four devoted daughters Mary Anne Murphy (John), Barbara Spiak (late Walter), Ellen Clickner (Walter) and Kate Donnelly (Mike); grandchildren John (Tara) and Brian Murphy, Nora, Jake (Barbara) and Dana Spiak, Michael and Grace Donnelly; great-grandchildren Trey, Rory and Liam Murphy, Cooper and Quinn Spiak.

He is further survived by his sisters-in-law Betty McKeon (late Ken) and Joan Prock (Sam) and many special nieces and nephews. Walt was pre-deceased by his brother Douglas (Arlene) and two infant brothers.

Walt graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in Albany and served in the U.S. Navy. Having had a long career with Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. working first in Glenmont and then in North Albany as an Archivist, he retired in 1990 as a member of its 40 Year Club. An avid reader and creative writer, Walt was also a Newspaper Man. He was first a reporter then a copy editor for the Troy Record and Times Union. He was original and creative. We recognized his headlines without reading the story. He continued to contribute commentary long after he retired.

A Watervliet resident for 70 years, Walt was a devoted family man and a great neighbor and friend. A faithful Philadelphia Phillies fan, Walt’s passion for baseball was passed down to his girls and grandchildren. He had a wry sense of humor, appreciated a good joke and perhaps liked to share a political opinion or two! Reading his daily newspapers and listening to talk radio was a staple of Dad’s daily routine for as long as we can remember.

A service, in celebration of Walter’s life, will be held on Wednesday at 11 am in the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and his burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Walter’s family on Tuesday from 4 until 7 pm at the funeral home.

Dad was an avid reader and lover of books. The family kindly asks, in lieu of flowers, you consider a donation to the Watervliet Public Library, 1501 Broadway, Watervliet, NY 12189 in Walt’s name. This would truly be a most appreciated tribute.
