Albany - The family of Sam E McCaffrey is heartbroken to announce his passing in the early morning hours of October 24th, 2019.

Sam was a true renaissance man whose love of music, art, and history encompassed his life. Sam was happiest riding "top-down" in his Jeep Wrangler through the Adirondack Mountains listening to his favorite tunes. His kindness, charisma and benevolent nature made him loved by all who met him.

Sam was a curious life- long learner with many interests. He could be found birding in the woods, volunteering at Saratoga Battlefield, attending a book reading or visiting a museum immersed in the beauty of art. Music fed his soul and attending live music events was his church.

Sam was a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School, SUNY Potsdam and The Rockefeller School of Public Policy. He was employed by the New York State Teachers Retirement System.

He is survived by his parents Karen Kramarchyk and Tim McCaffrey, his loving sisters Tess Lorraine and Emma Kate McCaffrey. His soulmate and boon companion Ashleigh Williams, his best friend Geoffery Vanderwoude and his tribe of like-minded souls; DJ, Ben, Mary, Kevin, Zach, Nick, Andrew, and Alice, you know who you are.

A celebration of Sam’s life will be held on Saturday at 11 am at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, 405 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY. All are welcome to attend.

When you have a moment or need some peace, go outside and listen to the trees. He’ll be there.

We met Sam when he was a roommate of our son Benjamin's in Albany. I remember commenting on a bumper sticker on Sam's Jeep, which led to a conversation about the current events of social and cultural ills that were being debated in the media and the variety of opinions and solutions that were offered. Knowing that perfection is never achievable we discussed the opposing positions to the plan that had been enacted and how there seemed to be as much effort to remove it as to support it. Then Sam said something enlightening that I will always remember..."At least someone is trying to do something about it and not just talking about it". You're right Sam, unless we put our hope and faith into doing something about our problems and not just talking about them the world would never change. Thank you Sam for reminding me, don't just talk about it, do something about it. Thank you for reminding me to make the time to put the top down, ride through the fresh air of the open spaces, and play the music that inspires us and fills us with great joy. Thank you for reminding me to make the most of today and everyday. May your new journey bring you as much hope and joy as you did to those of us still here on this journey.

I am heartbroken to learn this news. I liked Sam from the minute he became friends with our son Christopher, and with Cormac. He always had an amazing smile, and was smart and funny. Chris and I send all our love to all of you in this sad time.

I'm stunned and saddened to learn of Sam's passing. I knew Sam from NYSTRS, and spent some time with him as a teammate during an afternoon of training. He was a bright, intelligent, humorous young guy and he was about the same age as my own son. My heartfelt sympathies to all who knew and loved Sam.
