Obituary for Nicholas P. Thanopoulos
COLONIE – Nicholas “Nick” P. Thanopoulos, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 26, 2021. He was the beloved father of Anthony “Tony” N. Thanopoulos, husband of the late Dolores F. Thanopoulos and father of the late Angelo N. Thanopoulos.
Nick was raised in the Greek Isles and Athens and came to the United States in 1957. Upon becoming a Naturalized US Citizen and meeting and marrying his lovely wife, Dolores Gaunay at the Mayflower Restaurant in Troy, NY in 1958, Nick opened his tailor shop, Thanopoulos Fine Tailoring. He subsequently worked 30 years for Golub retiring in 1998. He then returned to his love of designing and tailoring and went to work as a Head Tailor at Jos. A. Bank from 1998 until his final retirement in 2009.
He was a proud member of the Watervliet Elks #1500 for 23 years. Nick was a long time member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Albany. He was a dedicated family man and provider and the best husband and father that anyone could ever ask for.
His funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 11 am at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Road, Albany where the Reverend Father Patric Legato will officiate. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery, Albany. Friends are invited and may also visit the Parker Bros. Memorial on Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The Officers of Watervliet Lodge are requested to gather at the funeral home to perform the Elks Memorial Service at 6 pm.
