Obituary for Reverend David Anthony Johnson, PhD

COVENTRY, RHODE ISLAND – Reverend David Anthony Johnson, Phd, 68, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Kent Hospital in Warwick, RI.

David Anthony Johnson was born February 17, 1953, in Albany, NY, the only son born to the late Lee A. and Dorothy Lewis Johnson. David was educated in the Albany public school system and graduated from Albany High School.

David loved traveling to and living in different states and communities. While living in Baltimore, MD, he earned an Associate in Arts degree from the Community College of Baltimore. David held several positions over the years to include Chaplain, Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, CT., as a member of the Spiritual Care team and as a pastoral care minister for the Compassionate Care Hospice, an Amedisys company, Taunton, MA.

At the young age of eight years old, David accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and was baptized into the fellowship of the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Reverend Dr. Moses Scipio Hunter. In later years, under the pastorate of the late Reverend Pleasant J. Foy, Sr., David faithfully served as Superintendent of the Sunday school, Sunday School teacher of the Adult class, member of the Church choir, member of the trustee board, Church sexton and later ordained as a Deacon.

As David continued in his service unto God and His people, the evidence of a greater call was more pronounced on his life. On April 2,1995, David accepted the call to the Gospel Ministry, preached his initial sermon and was licensed by unanimous vote of the Morning Star Church family. David also faithfully served in the Hudson River Frontier Missionary Baptist Association Sunday School and BTU Auxiliary.

As he grew in his love for God and His people, David stood on the mandate of II Timothy 2:15, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” During his religious studies, Rev. Johnson earned a Certificate of Ordination in Interfaith Ministry, a Doctor of Divinity as well as a Doctorate of Philosophy in Pastoral Care, all from the Esoteric Interfaith Theological Seminary in November of 2015.

Faithful, reliable and dedicated are words that best depict David’s characteristics as he lived his life. He was known for having a great sense of humor, a strong personality and a loving heart. To know him was to love him. But God loved him best and early the morning of October 9, 2021, God escorted David from life to life eternal.

Celebrating his life, legacy and love are his daughter, Dojoya L. Johnson; his grandsons, Domari Major Anthony Johnson, Dar’Shon King Taylor; his sister, Andrea L. Allen; his Godbrother, Glenn Gailliard and his Goddaughter, Glinnesa Gailliard, Esq; as well as a host of "nieces", "nephews", cousins, and friends.

The funeral service will be Thursday, October 21st at 12 noon at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet with Reverend Dr. Elgin Joseph Taylor, Sr., Pastor of the Sweet Pilgrim Baptist Church in Albany officiating.
