Obituary for Catherine Hyra (Thomas)

Watervliet – Catherine (Thomas) Hyra passed from this life on June 2, 2022 at the age of 71.

Born in New York City on May 29, 1951, Catherine was the daughter of the late Russell Miles and Catherine (Casey) Thomas.

She was raised in Troy and Watervliet and was a graduate of Watervliet High School. Following high school, Catherine was employed at the former Thornie’s Diner on Congress Street in Troy and it is there she began dating her future husband, restaurateur, Walter P. Hyra whom she met while in High School. She assisted him with establishing Walt’s Luncheonette in Albany and later would work with him at the Stage Coach Diner in Brunswick and the Route 50 Diner in Ballston Spa. Catherine was employed by the State of New York for thirty two years, initially with the Labor Board and later with the Pharmacy Board and the New York State Museum in Albany from where she retired. She was also a health care aide for the Religious Sisters of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul in Menands.

Catherine loved to travel with her family and friends and visited Las Vegas, Nevada, Florida and California. She also loved to attend live musical concerts. She loved to spend time with her family and had a heart of gold and was generous to all those in need.

She was wife of the late Walter P. Hyra, Sr. who passed on October 30, 2021. She is survived by her sons, Walter P. (Spring) Hyra, Jr. and Brian M. (Lisa) Hyra; her grandchildren, Payton, Devin and Sydney Hyra; her brother, Rick (Kelly) Thomas; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Andy and Ginny Hyra; her nieces and nephews, Peggy Thomas, Russell (Colleen) Thomas, Jr., Tyler Thomas, Gabby Thomas, Andrea (Paul) Aubin, goddaughter Tanya Hyra, Andy (Caitlin) Hyra and Alex (Shannon) Hyra as well as many grandnieces, grandnephews and members of the Hosgood family. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Linda Lavigne, Russell and Patty Thomas. Catherine always held a special place in her heart for the Sisters of the Presentation at St. Colman’s Home in Watervliet.

Friends are invited to visit with Catherine’s family on Sunday from 4 until 7 pm at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway in Watervliet. The funeral for Catherine will be held on Monday at 9:30 am from the funeral home and at 10 am in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Watervliet. Interment will follow in the Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands.
