Obituary for Elizabeth L. "Betty" Gaynor

WATERVLIET – Elizabeth “Betty” L. Gaynor passed from our world and entered eternal life on Monday, July 11, 2022 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a brief illness.

Betty was born and raised in Troy, NY, the daughter of the late Peter J. and Julia C. (Hannan) Gaynor. She was a graduate of Troy High School. She resided also in Green Island before moving to Watervliet in 1979.

She was employed as an executive secretary for over 40 years by the Albany Felt Company in Menands before retiring around 1989.

Betty was a devout Catholic and was a communicant of the former St. Patrick’s Church in Troy, St. Joseph’s Church in Green Island, St. Brigid’s Church in Watervliet and presently at St. Joseph’s Church in South Troy. The Sisters of Mercy held an important place in Betty’s heart.

She was a member of the Watervliet Senior Citizens Center and played bocci at the Italian Community Center in Troy.

Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, going out to dinner at Verdile’s Restaurant and had a memorable trip to Ireland to visit relatives in 1985 with her sister Kay.

Betty was predeceased by her brothers and sisters Anne Maloney, Thomas Gaynor, James Gaynor, Robert “Murph” Gaynor, Kay Gaynor and Frances Saraceni. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews.

The family extends its sincere thank you to Dr. Jamie Brickford and the 5th Floor Nursing Staff at Samaritan Hospital, especially Tiffany, Bryanna, Molly and Alex, for their care and dedication to Betty in her final days. The family also thanks the Watervliet Fire Department for their services.

The funeral will be Saturday morning at 8:15 am from the Cummings Funeral Home, 643 Third Avenue (Rt. 32 South of Arsenal), Watervliet and at 9:00 am at St. Joseph’s Church in South Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7 pm.
