Obituary for Walter J. Ewing

Loudonville – Walter John Ewing, 85, passed away July 21, 2022 at Evergreen Commons in East Greenbush. Born in Troy on June 13, 1937, he was the son of the late John and Catherine (LaBelle) Ewing.

Walter was a 1955 graduate of Watervliet High School, after which he attended Union College. He worked at GE Steam Turbine in Schenectady and then as a Civil Engineer for 36 years at the NYS Dept. of Transportation (Region 4) until his retirement in 1994. When not at work, Walter volunteered his time at many organizations; including as an EMT, Paramedic (Tek 674) and Treasurer of the West Albany Ambulance Squad. He was in the very first Paramedic class in the Capital Region and then went on to teach numerous EMT/Paramedic courses with MEDICO, introducing hundreds to the Emergency Medical Services career, that many are still active in today. Walter was also a social member of the West Albany Fire Dept., an altar server coordinator at St. Ambrose Church, a Cub Master in the Boy Scouts of America (Pack 78 at St. Pius Church), and donated a lot of blood to the American Red Cross over the years. As an active member of the Colonie Elks Lodge, he enjoyed calling BINGO games on Monday nights. Walter was the original owner of E&E Defensive Driving Associates where he taught thousands of motorists in the area to drive defensively. In his free time he enjoyed science fiction novels, movies, and over building a few porches and a still-standing shade roof at his home.

Walter is survived by his wife, Janet A. (Tribley) Ewing, his children; Dawn (lifelong companion Ron Gazetta) Ewing, Diana Goes, and Derek (Brandi) Ewing, his grandchildren; Donald & Jodi Ewing, Carl (Autumn) Ewing, Andrea & Christopher Goes, and Megan Ewing, and his great-granddaughter Reaghan VanBuskirk. Walter was preceded in death by his son, the late Donald J. Ewing.

Walter’s family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Evergreen Commons 2 Wynantskill Unit (especially nurse Sandra), The Community Hospice, and also everyone at the Colonie EMS Department, Colonie Police Department, Colonie Police Communications Division (911) and the Shaker Road Loudonville Fire Department for always being there in his times of need, day or night.

A visitation will be held Monday evening, July 25, from 4 to 7 PM at Bowen and Parker Bros. Funeral Home, Latham, with a funeral service to conclude the evening at 7 PM. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Agnes Cemetery, Cohoes. Those who wish to remember Walter in a special way may consider a donation to the Colonie EMS Benevolent Association Inc., P.O. Box 11076, Loudonville, NY 12211.
