Obituary for Helen G. Shufon (Cushing)

WATERVLIET – Helen G. Cushing Shufon, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday July 30, 2022 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, N.Y.

Helen was born on June 4, 1940. She was the proud daughter of the late Margaret I. Lewis and Harry J. Cushing, Sr. She is survived by her sons Edward M. Shufon Jr. and David M. Shufon; her sister’s Marjorie Finn, Kathleen Bayly and Elizabeth Cushing. She was predeceased by her brother Harry J. Cushing Jr and her sister, Mary (Sr. Mary Damien CSJ) Cushing. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.

Helen was a graduate of Catholic Central High School, Labor Studies Program of Cornell University School of Labor Relations and SUNY - Empire State College. She was employed with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for over 35 years, retiring in 1996 as Chief of the Accident Records Bureau. As an employee of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatal Accident Reporting System, she traveled throughout the country for training and educational purposes.

As a member of the former Church of Saint Patrick’s in Watervliet, NY, she was a member of the Pastoral Council, Eucharist Minister, Lector, Bazaar Committee, and the Christmas Giving Tree Committee for many years. When her sons were in school, she was active in the Home School Association and Religious Education Program. As a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (the merged Catholic parishes of Watervliet and Green Island), Helen was a member of the Sacramental Records Archive Committee. Helen computerized the original Baptism records of St. Brigid’s, St. Joseph’s, Sacred Heart of Mary and St. Patrick’s Parishes (1840 – 2005) and St. Joseph’s Parish Marriage Records.

Helen was a director and active participant of the local Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America’s Upstate New York Chapter Support Group for many years.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:00 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10:00 am at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 122 Vliet Boulevard, Cohoes where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Donald Rutherford. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 pm.
