Obituary for Claire Hoffman (Waugh)

LATHAM - Claire Waugh Hoffman passed from this life in the comfort of her home, surrounded by the love of her family, on Monday, August 15, 2022 at the age of 88.

Born in Albany on September 22, 1933, Claire was the daughter of the late Edwin A Waugh and Lucy (Flanagan) Waugh. She grew up in the Dudley Heights neighborhood of Albany where she was a graduate of St Joseph’s Academy and Albany High School. Upon graduation, she was employed by the former Williams Press in Menands. On July 3rd 1954, she was married to Robert A Hoffman and they settled in Newtonville /Latham. Together, Claire and Bob enjoyed 62 years of marriage before his passing on July 20, 2016.

Claire and Bob owned and operated Hoffman’s Miniature Golf and Driving Range. In 1980 , they formed Hoffman’s LTD and expanded their golf equipment and apparel store to include Pendleton Woolens and other specialty brands for which they were well known . In 2006, after 52 years in business, they retired. Claire loved to read and to travel and enjoyed spending the winter months in Naples, Florida. More than anything else, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Claire was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Latham.

Claire was the much loved mother of Karen H. (Gael) Coakley of Latham, Deborah M. Hoffman of Latham and the late Michael Robert Hoffman and Gregory John Hoffman; proud grandmother of Claire (Brian) Groudine, Christopher (Maria) Coakley, Timothy Coakley, Lucy Hoffman , Catherine Hoffman and the late Michael J. Coakley; cherished great-grandmother of Jack and Annie Groudine; dear sister of Joan Helton of Virginia and her brothers the late Edwin J Waugh and Robert J Waugh whose wife Katherine survives. Also surviving are several loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass, to which all are invited, will be celebrated by the Reverend Geoffrey D. Burke on Wednesday, August 17th at 10 am in Our Lady of Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet Shaker Road, Latham. The Rite of Committal and interment will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Relatives and friends may also call at the church chapel prior to the mass on Wednesday from 8:30-10 am.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr Kevin Costello and Hospice caregivers Eileen Fitzpatrick and Steve Bambury for their gentle kindness in caring for Claire.

In lieu of customary remembrances, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Association, 1003 Loudon Road, Cohoes, NY 12047 in memory of Claire Waugh Hoffman.
