Obituary for John James Dugan
Colonie - John J. Dugan died peacefully on August 13, 2022 after a brief hospital stay.
John was born on December 2, 1931 in Yonkers NY and was the son of the late Sophie and James Dugan. He was a graduate of Gorton High School in Yonkers and Manhattan College. John grew up in a large extended family during the Great Depression and remained close with his sister Mary Coleman, his brother in law Joe Coleman, and his cousins throughout their lives. Always up for adventure, “the cousins” traveled to Ireland, Branson, Florida and met regularly for “cousin’s lunches” where storytelling and laughter were always the order of the day. After graduating from Manhattan College, John worked for the New York State Comptroller’s Office; first as an auditor and later as the Director of State Aid. He retired in 1990.
John loved his family and enjoyed being a dad; raising his daughters; Maureen (Anthony) Rotondi, Susan (Michael) Striano, and Therese (Sean) Mentzer in Colonie NY. John created a lifetime of memories with his girls whether it was the Y-Guides, Saturdays at Army football games, bowling, movies, or playing ball in the yard. He was especially close with his nieces and nephews; Kathy (Joe) Mulrooney, Jack (Lori) Coleman, Jeannie (Jerry) Coleman Demko, and Jimmy (Jenny) Coleman and all of their children who he loved very much. He was a constant presence in their lives. John married his beloved Kathy Macke-Muller-Dugan in November 1996. Jack and Kathy enjoyed 25 years of marriage and travels to Hawaii, Disney, Ireland and more. John was exceptionally proud of his grandchildren; Aaron, Ryan and Josh Striano; Ethan, Katie, and Michael Rotondi; and Christopher Mentzer. He was as active and engaged as a grandfather as he was as a dad, leaving his grandchildren with a legacy of love and memories.
John enjoyed his friends and was active in the community. He was 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a communicant of Christ Our Light. He especially enjoyed his weekly Friday lunches with his good friends William Ginsburgh and Stan Marzolek. He was always up for a round of darts at the Latham Council of the Knights and never missed an event or party there.
The family would like to thank the ED and E3 staff at Albany Medical Center, the palliative care (3rd floor team) at Teresian House, and the staff at Peregrine Senior Living.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, August 17 from 4 to 7 PM at Bowen and Parker Bros. Funeral Home, Latham. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 AM on Thursday at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, Loudonville.
