Obituary for Mildred Lucy Howarth

Menands – Miss Mildred Lucy Howarth peacefully entered into eternal life on August 17, 2022 surrounded by the love of her family. She was 108 years old.

Born at home in Cohoes on June 13, 1914, Mildred was one of five children born to the late John W. and Lucy Rose (Llanes) Howarth. Her siblings, Elaine Grace Crannell, Louise Edna Howarth, John Stanley Howarth and Edna Louise Dominski all preceded her in death.

Mildred resided in Cohoes until the age of ten when her family relocated to the Village of Menands. She would reside in the Village for the next ninety years. Following her retirement, Mildred lived with and cared for her mother until her passing in 1973.

Mildred was a graduate of Watervliet High School and would later further her education at the Mildred Elly Secretarial School. Soon after her graduation she took employment with Montgomery Ward & Company in Menands and worked in the office as a bookkeeper and records clerk for more than 30 years before retiring in 1962.

She was a member and former secretary of the Menands Senior Citizens and enjoyed the times spent with her friends and taking trips with the group. Mildred was devout in her Catholic faith and was a parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Church in Menands where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and served as the organization’s secretary. As a long-time Village of Menands resident, Mildred was lovingly known to many as “Aunt Millie”. She was always community minded and enjoyed being active in village affairs. Mildred enjoyed reading and playing bingo scratch off tickets.

Mildred’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Elderwood Village, Shaker Place, St. Peter’s Hospice Inn and the Community Hospice of Albany County for their kindness and care given to Mildred and her family.

Mildred is survived by several generations of nieces and nephews including Paul Dominski, Jean Parker, Lynn England and the late Joan Filkins.
