Obituary for Thomas Robert Hebert

GREEN ISLAND – Thomas R. Hebert passed peacefully from this life, surrounded by the love of his family, on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at the age of 77.

Tom was born in Troy on October 20, 1945, the son of Thomas and Margaret (Burke) Hebert. He was raised and educated in Watervliet and was a member of the graduating class of 1964 of Watervliet High School. Tom furthered his education at Hudson Valley Community College earning a degree in business. In 1967 Tom enlisted in the United States Army and served our nation in Korea during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and served in the Army Reserve until 1973.

Tom was employed for more than 25 years as a computer programmer for the New York State Higher Education Department in Albany and later worked as a computer specialist and dispatcher for the Green Island Police Department.

Family and friends will always remember Tom as a talented athlete who had a love for all sports. In high school he played football, baseball and basketball and while in the military Tom was a talented pitcher on the Army’s fast-pitch softball team. He would later continue to play softball in local leagues in Cohoes, Green Island and Lansingburgh. Tom lent his knowledge and skills through coaching and did so in football on the high school level at both Watervliet High School and Lansingburgh High School, on the college level at Siena College, and on the semi pro level with the Uncle Sams “Sammies” and the Metro Mallers. He more recently enjoyed coaching his grandchildren in Little League Baseball in Green Island. Tom also loved the game of golf and played on Monday’s at the Stadium Golf Club in Schenectady. He was an avid NY Yankees, Giants and Siena Saints fan and his knowledge of sports trivia was unrivaled. Above all else Tom’s family will always cherish the memory of a loving, kind and caring man who tried to give more than he received and who, through his sense of humor and numerous kind acts, left the world a better place.

Tom’s family wishes to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Shaker Place Nursing and Rehabilitation in Colonie and the Intensive Care Unit at Samaritan Hospital in Troy for their care and support to Tom and his family.

Tom was the much loved husband for 52 years of Lynda (McNulty) Hebert; the cherished father of Kimberly Hebert (John White), Nicole Kelsey and Melissa Chiappone (J.R.); the proud grandfather of Brett and Courtney Hancock, Shane White, Taylor and Ryana Kelsey and Ciana and Mia Chiappone; brother of Patricia Donovan (Thomas), Carol Hebert, Richard Hebert and the late Private First Class Robert W. Hebert, US Army who was killed in action in Vietnam on October 8, 1967. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
