Obituary for Joan Smith Doran (Smith)

TROY – Joan Teresa Smith Doran, passed away peacefully Friday, December 2, 2022, after a long and beautiful life. She was born in Troy on May 28, 1931, the daughter of the late Joseph Logan Smith, Captain Troy Police Department and Teresa McQuaid Smith.

Joan was raised and educated in Troy and was a graduate of Catholic Central High School and graduated Russell Sage College with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Joan enjoyed her career in teaching in The Enlarged City School District of Troy, retiring from School 12 where she met many lifelong friends.

Upon retirement, Joan and Will enjoyed over 20 years at their second home in Naples, Florida; during this time they would golf, meet new friends and cherish every sunset possible. Joan was a gifted gardener and enjoyed penning a handwritten note, a trait she has passed on to her children. She cherished her lifelong friendship with Ed and Chic O’Haire.

Joan was known for her warm smile and could brighten everyone’s day with her kindness. Joan found true happiness with her family and she placed all of her trust in God.

Joan was the beloved wife of 54 years of the late J. Willard Doran, whom she adored; devoted mother to her three children; Son, Daniel J. Doran and Linda D. Crucetti of Troy, NY, Daughter, Nancy Doran-Hite and her husband Charles A. Hite of Delmar, NY and Daughter, Kathleen M. Congero and her husband William J. Congero of Bloomfield, CT; loving Noni to her grandchildren, Spencer W. Congero of San Diego, CA, Dr. Daniel P. Doran of Somerville, MA and Elizabeth Joan Hite of Delmar, NY; sister of the late Edward J. Smith and Margaret C. Smith of Troy; sister in law of the late J. Gilbert and Margaret Doran.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to Joan’s friends for their cards, visits and many acts of kindness. The family would like to give special thanks to Van Rensselaer Manor, A-1, where Joan lived out her final years.

Joan’s funeral mass will be Tuesday at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Avenue, Troy. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday from 4-7 pm at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet.
