Poestenkill - Nicholas John Normile Jr, 87, passed away in the comfort of his home on January 26, 2023 after a long illness.

Born on May 16, 1935, Nick was the son of Nicholas John and Nellie Newman Normile. He graduated from the La Salle Institute in 1953, and earned BA and MA degrees from Siena College in 1957 and 1961. For over 44 years Nick served as a beloved history teacher, guidance counselor, and coach at Heatly High School in Green Island, NY. His dedication to teaching and counseling spanned several family generations. Nick was an avid reader of history and biographies. An enthusiastic cook, Nick drew inspiration from a variety of cooking shows. His skills ranged from creating the best homemade pizzas around, coordinating the menu for picnics enjoyed at Tanglewood, to elaborate Thanksgiving feasts for his entire extended family. One of his greatest pleasures was monthly lunches with the LaSalle Class of ’53 Alumni.

His death is preceded by that of his beloved son Nicholas John Normile III who passed away in 1981 at the age of 10 and whose mother Elizabeth Riley survives; his brother, Thomas Normile who passed away in 2017, and his sister Barbara Casey in 2016. Nick is survived by his wife of 30 years Elizabeth Kauffman; his sisters Ellen Lauzon and Mary Anne Mohr; his cousin Kate Downes; his step-children Chris Norton and Emily (Norton) Sand; his nieces and nephews, Lisa Mohr, Kelly (Mohr) Newman, Meghan (Casey) Baker, Amy (Casey) Adler, Ellen Casey, Maria Lauzon, Elizabeth Lauzon, Eric Mohr, Michael Casey, Jason Lauzon, David Lauzon, and John Lauzon.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 10:00 am in St. Michael the Archangel Church, 175 Williams Rd, Troy, NY. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet, NY. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Nicholas’ family at St. Michael the Archangel Church on Thursday, prior to the Mass, from 9:00-10:00 am.
