Obituary for Daniel F. "Danny" Tierney

PITTSTOWN – Daniel F. “Danny” Tierney, 66, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 2, 1956 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Danny was the son of the late Robert M. Tierney and Audrey Bell Tierney.

Danny was a graduate of Shaker High School, class of ’74, HVCC and SUNY Albany. He also did the “Semester at Sea” program out of Woods Hole, MA.

After graduation, Danny moved to England where he worked as a gardener on a 350 acre estate. He returned to the Capital area where he started his career at National Grid. He retired as a Chief Line Mechanic after 33 years of service.

It was at National Grid where he met his wife Debbie. After a failed attempt to woo her in 1985, he finally won her heart in 2001. They were married on the beach in Kapalua, Maui in 2004. On their 5th anniversary they went back, and continued returning every year. Danny also loved Cape Cod, MA where he spent a week every summer.

There are three things Danny is known for; his love of the Grateful Dead, the “Track” and his green thumb. His tomatoes and chili sauce were loved by all. If a box showed up at your doorstep from Danny, you knew it contained his chili sauce and raspberry preserves.

Every year since 1985, Danny traveled to the Breeder’s Cup with his buddies, George, Frankie and Steve. A huge animal lover, Danny volunteered his time at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.

Danny was the devoted husband of 19 years to Debbie Rourke Tierney; father of the late Stephen Capron; father-in-law of Amie Capron and doting grampy to Jenson Capron both of Essex, England; loving brother of Michael (Marsha) Tierney, Timothy (Sharon) Tierney and Beth Ann Tierney (Michael McNary); brother-in-law of Mary Beth (William) Rourke Numann and Martha Rourke McElligott. Also survived by several nieces and nephews who he cherished.

Also his friends Joe Quirk, Tim Slattery and George DeWitt who held a special place in his heart. He also loved his beloved Corgis, Charlotte and the late Cooper and Carley.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:00 am at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet with Rev. Edward Kacerguis officiating. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 pm.

In lieu of flowers and because of his love for animals, contributions would be appreciated to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204 or mohawkhumane.org.
