Obituary for Maddalena Canistro (Carriera)

BRUNSWICK, NY– Maddalena (Carriera) Canistro, 96, died peacefully Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at her daughter Maria’s home in Brunswick surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy on July 21, 1926, the daughter of the late Luigi and Filomena (DiMaggio) Carriera. Maddalena sang in the choir and was personal friends of Padre Pio who was from her hometown and who baptized her four oldest children. She was a seamstress and taught sewing while residing in Italy.

Maddalena emigrated to the United States with her husband and children in 1968 and settled in Troy, NY. In 1984, the family moved to Brunswick, NY where they built a new home. She was employed as a seamstress by the Little Sisters of the Poor on 10th Street in Troy and later at Our Lady of Hope Residence in Latham for over 35 years before retiring in the early 2000’s. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church and the former St. Peter’s Church both in Troy.

Maddalena was a wonderful homemaker who loved to cook, made great pizzas for her kids bake sales, enjoyed gardening around her home and kept her home spotless. She was very particular about the upkeep of her home and also the produce she purchased at Price Chopper.

She was the beloved wife of the late Michaele “Mike” Canistro who died in 2001; devoted mother of Maria (Antonio) Antini of Brunswick, John (Kim) Canistro of Troy, Filomena (Thomas) Aidala of Rotterdam, Anthony “Tony” Canistro of Albany and the late Luigi “Gino” Canistro; adored grandmother of Celestnino, Mike (Jessica), Mark (Elizabeth) and Giana; great grandmother of Mason, Hunter and Giuliana. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Italy.

She was predeceased by her four siblings in Italy, Salvatore, Antonio, Giovanni and Rosa.

The funeral service will be Friday at 1:30 pm at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet. Entombment will follow in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday prior to the service from 12:00 noon – 1:30 pm.
