Obituary for Michael John Hickey Jr.

Waterford – Michael John Hickey, Jr. passed away at the Albany Medical Center on March 2, 2023. Born in Staten Island on September 20,1942, he was the son of the late Michael Sr. and Louise (Ahrens) Hickey.

Mike grew up and lived much of his life on Staten Island. As a youth he could often be found trekking to the Bronx to attend Yankee home games. He always rooted for his favorite players which he even got to know personally since he would be there so frequently. Yogi Berra treated him like his own family, Andy Carey taught him how to play third base, and Hoyt Wilhelm taught him his famous knuckleball. Some of his other favorite players were Bob Turley, Don Larsen, and Whitey Ford.

Mike began his work life on Wall Street as a Bond Trader for Shields and Co. and Bear Stearns. He also became quite the cook while working as a Chef's Assistant in Manhattan. Mike later worked as a safety and security officer for 25 years. He was a member of Local Union 1790, Council 82, and became statewide union president of AFSCME. Mike even wrote a bill that was passed in 1980 which earned better treatment for security officers in the workplace.

Overall, Mike was a fun-loving and adventurous man who loved taking road trips, playing billiards competitively with his custom pool cue, observing the snakes at the Staten Island Zoo, listening to 50s and 60s classic rock, going to the spectacular oldies concerts at Proctors Theater, and tending to his rifle collection which included his favorite .22 Winchester rifle. He enjoyed spending time at his seasonal camp on Alexandria Bay and taking his boat out on the river. His favorite pastimes were baseball and fishing for Pike along the Route 9P bridge on Saratoga Lake. Mike had a sense of humor that could lift anyone’s spirits and for that he will certainly be missed.

Mike is survived by his life partner of over 55 years, Alice Svendsen of Cohoes and his best friend Luigj Kapaj of Staten Island. He was preceded in death by his brother Dennis Hickey.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 6PM at Bowen and Parker Bros. Funeral Home, Latham. All are invited to visit at the funeral home before the service from 4 to 6 PM. Michael will be laid to rest in St. Peter’s Cemetery on Staten Island.
