Obituary for Judith Charlotte "Judy" Pierson

STEPHENTOWN, NY - Judith “Judy” Charlotte Pierson, age 83, formerly of Stephentown, quietly passed away at Mt. Carmel Care Center in Lenox, Massachusetts on March 8, 2023.

Judith was born in Elida, Ohio, daughter of the late Wayne and Ruth Teegarden Pierson. She graduated from Newark (Ohio) High School in 1957 and Bowling Green State University in 1961, where she was a member of the Mortar Board honor society and recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. She received her MS degree in 1968 from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Judith started her career as a teacher in Euclid, Ohio, before moving to Connecticut where she was a guidance counselor for Litchfield Public Schools and Capital Community College in Hartford.

Upon retirement, Judith moved to Stephentown, New York with her life partner, Sandy Hamer, where they were active volunteers in various local organizations. They added wonderful ideas, tremendous pizazz and were always eager to be of assistance. They were members of the Stephentown Historical Society, Friends of the Stephentown Memorial Library and Shakespeare and Co. in Lenox, MA. After Sandy’s passing in 2010, Judith remained active in those organizations as well as the Stephentown Food Pantry.

Judith was an avid reader and a lover of music, who also enjoyed hiking, snowshoeing, cooking and traveling. We remember her as always happy, with a keen sense of humor and a bursting, contagious laugh.
In addition to her parents, Judith was pre-deceased by her brother Philip W. Pierson and dear friend, Sandra K. Hamer. She is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Pierson, cousin Cindy Smith, nephew Eric Pierson, niece Erin Noonan, step-nephews Gregg Hempleman and Jeffrey Hempleman, and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.

Sadly, Alzheimer’s disease took Judith away from us slowly by degrees and cruelly. Her rapier wit was stilled. Her last few years albeit comfortable were a sad diminishment of a bright funny articulate person. Alzheimer’s Disease is not kind.

Contributions in memory of Judith may be made to the Stephentown Memorial Library, 472 NY 43, Stephentown, NY 12168 or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Hall and Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43 P.O. Box 9, Stephentown, NY 12168 will handle the final arrangements.

A memorial service will be held later.
