Obituary for Michael Nystoriak

Cohoes – Michael Nystoriak, 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 11, 1919, Michael was the son of the late Theodore and Julia Haschytz Nystoriak. As a child Michael, with his family, moved to Maplewood, NY where he resided for four years before settling in Cohoes. He was a 1938 graduate of Cohoes High School and was an army veteran of the Second World War. Michael served his country in the European Theater and was honorably discharged on February 24, 1946 and awarded three combat stars for his service.

Upon his return from service, Michael married the love of his life, the former Pauline Pouchak, on June 2, 1946 in St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church in Maplewood. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage before Pauline’s passing on December 28, 2012.

Michael was employed as a machinist by the Simmons Machine Tool Company for 18 years and later by the Behr-Manning Company (Norton Company) for 22 years. He retired in 1982. He enjoyed camping in New Jersey with his family, fishing for Bluefish and gardening.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church in Maplewood, the American-Russian Association, the Maplewood American Legion Post #1615 and was a bowler with the Norton Retirees at Alpha Lanes.

Michael is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Jr. and Donna L. Nystoriak of Troy and David and Barbara Nystoriak of Melrose; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Nystoriak Mack and the Very Reverend Stephen Mack of Auburn, NY; his cherished grandchildren, Michael Nystoriak, III and his wife Susan of Saranac, NY, Mark Nystoriak and his wife Sandra of Latham, Sarah Smith of Troy, Andrea Nichols and her husband Thomas of Huntersville, NC, Matthew Nystoriak and his wife Jessica of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, Christopher Mack of Auburn, NY and Tanya Mack of Wilmington, NC; his cherished great-grandchildren, Michael Alexander, Thomas John, Nicholas Jaydon, Julia Rose, Joshua Tyler, Nathaniel Owen, Charlotte Christine, Loralie Rose, Madalyn Rae, Olive Frances and Emma Belle; his brothers, Walter and Metro Nystoriak of Cohoes; his sisters, Eva Nystoriak of Cohoes and Sophie Zonitch of Las Vegas, NV and his niece, Natasha. In addition to his wife, Michael was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Christine R. Nystoriak; his brother Joseph Nystoriak and his sister Tessie Nystoriak.

His funeral will be held from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Monday morning at 9 o’clock and at 9:30 o’clock in St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, Maplewood, where the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Very Reverend Father Peter Olsen and Very Reverend Father Stephen Mack, Michael’s son-in-law and pastor of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Auburn, NY. Interment will follow in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Maplewood. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Michael’s family at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 until 7 PM during which time the Parastas service will be held at 7 o’clock.

Contributions, in lieu of flowers and in memory of Michael Nystoriak, may be made to the Restoration Fund of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, 6 Lansing Avenue, Watervliet, NY 12189.
